Helping children and families in Malaysia

The IQRA’ Reading Program at Pos Betau in the state of Pahang in Malaysia commenced on September 6, 2018. This class was created to serve the first generation of Orang Asli (indigenous group) from the Semai tribe who are new to Islam. The goal is to teach them how to recite the Qur’an and understand the principles of Tajwid, the rules of  pronunciation correctly in reading in Arabic. Currently there are 40 registered students. Weekly attendance averages at 20 students. This class is conducted once a monthly on a Thursday (9:00 am-12:00 pm) except during the month of Ramadan. There are many challenges that the students have to overcome to attend this class. The students converge to Pos Betau for the lesson with some of them having to walk for 2 hours from their villages to get to Pos Betau for the monthly lesson. The students also have to walk back home to their village under the hot sun after the class is dismissed at 12.00 noon. We provide them lunch before sending them home. This is a volunteer work based on individual basis, not an NGO activities. Funding is from personal expenses and donations from generous and committed friends.
